Below are some before
photos of the1909 Columbia Graphophone.
The restoration of this Graphophone will start soon.
The Columbia Graphophone
was manufactured by The Columbia Phonograph
Co. from about 1909 to 1911 and was produced for the American
Women's League, University City, Missouri. This model can also be found
with a variety of other plaques as it was sold on special order to dealers
and organizations for special purposes such as promotions or membership
drives. This Columbia Graphophone came standard
with a single-spring motor, an Analyzing Reproducer, and a nickel-plated
horn. The owner purchased this machine with a small Columbia horn, which
is not shown in these photos. We were very fortunate to locate an original
"Symphony" horn in oak produced by Columbia. The Columbia "Symphony"
horn in oak was an $11.oo option
in 1909.
This oak graphophone will be completely restored
back to factory condition using the same techniques as when the machine
was new. Shellac and varnish will be applied and hand rubbed between coats
which will completely duplicate the original finish. The motor and reproducer
will also be rebuilt.
